This is the Day

How is YOUR day going? Is this a crazy year OR WHAT!! Nothing seems to surprise me anymore. Things I never thought I would see in my lifetime are happening in pairs now. The world seems to have gone off the rails but, should I expect anything less as a Believer? I don’t think so, yet I find it hard to convince other Believers otherwise. No matter what happens in any given day, God is not surprised by it. It is another day, another day He is completely in control of, another day He has made, and “I” will Rejoice In It.

‘This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it. ‘ Psalm 118:24

If you do not believe in God, I can understand how and why you would be going through a thousand different emotions and feelings. I do the same thing as a Believer but have come to understand you cannot trust emotions and feelings. These types of barometers do not lead us closer to God and a place of peace, but to a place of harmful attitudes such as anger, rage, malice and slander to name a few. Once you allow those types of emotions to surface, they come out in our speach and actions. You don’t have to look far or have a great memory to remeber the riots in the cities or the attack on the US capital. We have seen it recently from BLM, Trumpers, Liberals, Conservatives, Homosexuals, Heterasexuals, atheist and yes, professing Christians to name a few. These however are easy to distance ourselves from because we are not directly involved, but what about our comments on social media, at work or even to our family and friends? Once we give our feelings and emotions a spot in our heart, they are hard to control. From a human standpoint it is nearly impossible but from a spiritual standpoint it IS possible. But not just any spirit but, the Holy Spirit.

‘But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. ‘ Galatians 5:22-23

WIthout the Gospel, none of this is possible. God’s Son came to this earth in flesh, lived a perfect life to become the perfect sacrifice, be crucified on a cross for your and my sins, buried then raised from the dead so we could be raised to new life, here on earth AND eternally. After Jesus left this earth to return to the Father, He sent us a Helper, the Holy Spirit, to help and guide us in our new life journey to become more like Him. The fruit of the Spirit we receive does not come in bits and pieces but comes as a total package. That is why the Bible says it is the Fruit of the Spirit not the Fruits of the Spirirt. We may not seem to have all elements in the same quantity immediately, but they are there. They are sorta like a muscle and will grow as we use them. One element we don’t focus on as much as we should is self-control. Self-control is one element of the fruit of the Spirit that helps us as we overcome, through His power, many of the sins that so easily entangle us. It is this self-control that allows us to control these emotions and feelings that lead us into so many sinful thoughts and actions. It is Who allows us to overcome one of Satans greatest strongholds, our Earthly Nature.

‘Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. Because of these, the wrath of God is coming. You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. But now you must also rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips. ‘ Colossians 3:5-8

The Holy Spirit is what works in us to keep our focus on Him and His will and not our circumstances or what is going on around us. Not that we should not be aware or concerned, but that the circumstances should not consume or overwhelm us. He who surrounds our circumstances in greater than the circumstances surrounding us. In that truth, we can be assured of His Presence and His Peace.

‘Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory. ‘ Colossians 3:1-4

So as we continue into this New Year with many changes, challenges and obstacles in front us, we need to follow Jesus’ commmand to Love God and Love Others. The world will know us by the love we have for one another. As we do this and move forward if things don’t work out the way we would like or if times get tough, jut remember the things the Apostle Paul went through and his attitide in midst of them.

‘I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I can do all this through him who gives me strength. ‘ Philippians 4:11-13

Now if you don’t know the Jesus I am speaking of, or have never received His gift of Eternal Life. You can do so today. You can begin this awesome journey and be forgiven of your sins and receive the filling of the Holy Spirit. There is no magic prayer or string of words you must recite. Just simply believe He exist and ask God to reveal himself to you. This is the first step. As you begin to read His word, you will realize your brokeness and your need for forgiveness. This will not be the end of your journey, simply the beginning. He is standing at the door waiting for you to open it.
